Protective Galvanizing for Longevity
Allied Steel offers hot dip galvanizing services for structural steel products, sheet metal and steel plate. Hot dip galvanizing is a process with 3 basic steps: surface preparation, hot dip galvanizing and inspection. The process starts out with a series of different chemicals the steel is dipped into in order to remove all dirt, oil and other residues. This involves degreasing, rinsing, pickling, rinsing, and fluxing. Once the steel has gone through these processes, it will be ready to be hot-dipped galvanized in a zinc bath for the final step. Surface preparation is the most important part of this process as the zinc will not react with the steel unless it is a completely clean surface.
The zinc layer acts as a barrier against corrosive agents and will allow the steel to last much longer in harsh outdoor environments. Oftentimes you see galvanized steel in outdoor areas that are constantly exposed to the elements. Some instances include galvanized structural steel used in outdoor parking garages, galvanized beams in houses built near bodies of water, and galvanized angle clips used in the maritime industry. These are just a few examples of the various applications of galvanized steel products.
